1. Think for a minute about your daily physical activity. Compare your activity with the recommendations in the Health Debate box titled “What Kind of Exercise Is Best?”
2. Calculate your BMI for your current weight and height.
• What is your level of health risk based on your BMI?
• Is this satisfactory?
Now calculate your waist-to-hip ratio.
• Do you have an android or gynoid body shape?
• What does this tell you?

1. Our food preferences, food choices, and food likes affect the food we consume. Think for a moment about the foods you ate yesterday.
• Why did you choose those particular foods?
• What influenced your selections (e.g., time, convenience, taste preferences, nutritional
value)?
2. Sam, a 35-year-old father of two, is trying to get fit. He weighs about 20 pounds more than he would like and smokes a pack of cigarettes daily. Because he works the second shift at the local factory, he tends to be awake in the early morning hours. He watches several infomercials that promote the use of herbal supplements to help him lose weight. He is suspicious about these products and would like to learn more about them. List several credible sources that he might check to learn more about this topic.

1. Kelly, a 20-year-old college student, has been extremely tired lately and has been sick frequently during the past winter. Sandy, her roommate, thinks that Kelly might be anemic. Kelly is a vegan and currently weighs 115 pounds and is 5 feet, 7 inches tall. Consider the following questions:
A. Could Kelly be anemic? What symptoms of anemia does Kelly exhibit?
B. How might Kelly’s eating habits influence her risk for anemia?
2. Scott’s girlfriend has invited him home for Sunday lunch to meet her parents. Their relationship is serious, and Scott is a bit nervous during the lunch. The lunch consists of a tossed salad with her mom’s special buttermilk dressing, baked ham, sweet potato casserole, broccoli in cheese sauce, hard-crusted dinner rolls with butter and strawberry preserves, milk or iced tea, and cheesecake for dessert. About an hour after lunch Scott was not feeling well at all. His stomach was cramping; he felt bloated and developed a case of diarrhea.
What might be the problem?

1. Susie, a high school junior, is interested in eating more healthy foods. A noted limitation for this behavior change is her busy after-school schedule that allows only enough time to eat dinner that was purchased at a drive-through. Susie typically orders chicken nuggets with ranch dressing for dipping, fries, and a super guzzler cola.
What other food choices would be quick, but healthier, given her fast-paced life?
2. Think about what you ate for lunch today.
• Which foods would start to be digested in the mouth?
• Which foods would need bile for digestion?
• Where would the majority of the nutrients be absorbed?
